Medical scientists are still a long way from fully understanding the causes and hence finding the cures for migraine headaches. However, research has provided us with information on getting relief from migraines. To get satisfactory relief from migraines it is best to first understand some of the causes of your pain.
Relief from migraines still focuses on the symptoms, but if we can get some understanding of the causes we may be able to reduce the symptoms and hence pain relief may prove more effective. Much of the relief from migraines is about controlling or masking the pain to help us cope. Unfortunately until migraines are fully understood this is the best the medical profession can offer.
The accepted theory on migraines is that a chemical imbalance within the blood cells results in the blood vessels near the skull behaving abnormally. This behaviour takes the manner of contractions and expansions within the blood vessels in an unpredictable and uncontrollable pattern. Scientists are trying to establish why this behaviour occurs, whether it can be prevented or if it can be controlled once it starts. Until these questions are answered then our relief from migraines stays relatively primitive.
Due to the black hole of knowledge which surrounds migraines the usually relief from migraines is in the form of pain management and sometimes an anti inflammatory medication may be prescribed to reduce any possible swelling in the blood vessels. Severe migraines can be crippling and extreme enough to prevent the sufferer from continuing their daily routines. Additional to the pain the sufferer can also experience nausea and a blurring of their vision. These symptoms cannot successfully be treated; hence relief from migraines is about controlling the pain and therefore hopefully reducing some of the stress the patient is suffering with.
If you are looking for the most comprehensive relief from migraines then you will need to analysis your lifestyle. This analysis will involve reviewing all aspects of your life, your diet, sleep patterns, pastimes and other stimulants and stresses. Caffeine is believed to be one of the most common triggers of migraines, however, simply removing caffeine will not necessary remove the migraine. If you thought that caffeine was your migraine trigger then you would need to establish when you drank, is it first thing in the morning, instead of breakfast, what would you substitute it with? These are all considerations; however, until you have probed these lifestyle alternatives you will need to rely on relief from migraines with pain medication.
Although migraines are associated with stress, stress is not in itself believed to be a trigger. The pain of a migraine can cause stress, or the caffeine you use to control your stress may cause the migraine, but not the stress. Unfortunately all migraine triggers need to be considered in this light.
Until we have more knowledge then our relief from migraines is limited. Stay positive and try to understand what might trigger the migraine attacks.
